Week of Prayer | Day 1

DAY 1 – National Focus

1First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.

Pray For Current Government Leaders  – pray for President Obama and Vice President Biden, for Governor Brownback, for Senators Moran and Roberts, and for Representatives Huelskamp, Jenkins, Pompeo, and Yoder  – pray that they would be effective in their protecting and advancing the good of society as well as punishing evil.  Pray that they would cooperate with the righteous standards of God in their approach to governing and law making.  Pray that their efforts that align with God’s standards would be fruitful and that efforts to the opposite would be thwarted.

Pray for their families – for protection, provision, and unity as these officials are pulled in many different directions.

Pray For Gospel Centered Lobbyists and Gospel Freedom Advocates  – there are many men and women who are actively working with politicians and the judicial system within the bounds of existing law and legislation to defend and protect the historical freedoms Christians have enjoyed in our country.  Pray that they will not grow weary in their doing well, that they would not compromise biblical principles in an environment where temptations to do so abound, and that the favor of the Lord would shine upon them.

Pray For The Tuesday Elections  – we have the opportunity to live in the tension of God’s sovereignty and man’s responsibility.  Our responsibility is to exercise our rights as citizens to let our voice be heard through voting (or, for those led to do so by conviction, not voting).  Pray for wisdom and courage for those voting.  We are also reminded of God’s sovereignty.  It is He who removes kings and sets up kings (Daniel 2:21).  Pray that our God would be who He says He is and that we would be able to rest in His character regardless of who is elected.

Pray For Our Response – God’s Word exhorts us to “Be subject for the Lord’s sake to every human institution…” (1 Peter 2:13)  This is not only an outward subjection but an inward one as well.  This is much easier to do when the “human institution…” is one with which we agree.  Pray that regardless of the outcome on Tuesday that our hearts and behavior would honor this exhortation and that we would remember this if for the “Lord’s sake” and for His glory!

Praise God – Prayer is not only making requests.  Take time to praise the Lord for His provision for our country – through our history (the Pilgrims, the War for Independence, the Expansion West, the Civil War, the Industrial Revolution, the Great Awakening, the Second Great Awakening, Two World Wars, the Civil Rights Era…so many chapters in our history where God’s hand has clearly – and sometimes not so clearly – been at work to advance His Gospel through our country.  Praise God for the freedoms and provisions we enjoy!
